2. Respect
3. Attention (praise/recognition)
4. Knowledge
Those four things need to be present at all times otherwise they will not be great students. If there is no rules they will be a behavior problem, if you do not respect them they will not respect you, if you do not care for them they will not care for you, and if you do not teach them then why are you a teacher?
I agree with you. In terms of the last note, some teachers just teach because they have no other choice. Students notice these things. Once the student sees the teacher is not excited about teaching, all these rules go out the window. Do not expect your students to be happy about something you are not.
